Abbotsford Centre

When it comes to multi-purpose arenas, The Abbotsford Centre in Abbotsford, British Columbia, is one of the best. The venue was designed as a home for the Abbotsford Heat, a team for the American Hockey League with an expected cost of $64.7 million. Construction began in 2007 and was finally completed on May 10, 2009.

The plan to fund the venue began on September 25, 2006, when the Abbotsford Council voted unanimously to hold a referendum asking to borrow $85-million to fund three community projects, including a new entertainment and sports center. The arena was approved by voters that year with a 54.8% majority.

When the venue was completed, the resident hockey team had brought in fans of great hockey every home game. But when the Heat announced that they would be leaving in 2014, the venue owners had to accommodate itself to keep hockey fans coming. So the Abbotsford Centre announced that it would start a recreational hockey league to fill open dates in the arena schedule that the Heat had formerly filled.

In between concerts, demolition derbies, and other events, the venue had recreational hockey to fill the needs of the sports of the venue’s patrons. Later, on May 2, 2018, the Canadian Elite Basketball League announced that the Frazer Valley Bandits would come to play in the Abbotsford Centre in 2019, during the basketball season from May to August.

Abbotsford’s newest and greatest sports arena now serves the community as the home for basketball, incredible concerts, and other similar events.
